The Department of History seeks to provide students with an understanding of the broad foundations of historical studies through a critico-theoretical approach and prepares them for teaching, research, and graduate studies.

The Department offers major and minor programs in History.

A student intending to major in History is required to pass any one of the following courses, namely, Philippine History (PHILHIS), Rizal Course (JPRIZAL), or History of Civilization (HISTCIV).

Major Courses

Philippine History (philhis)

3 units
A study of the growth and development of Filipino society from its earliest beginnings to the modern period. The course aims at familiarizing the students with the development of political, social and cultural traditions that helped shape the character of the Filipino nation at the different stages of its historical development.

Rizal course (jprizal)
3 units
A course on the life and works of Jose Rizal which aims to provide an in-depth appreciation of the relevance of his socio-political thought to the emergence of nationhood.

History of civilization (histciv)
3 units
A holistic survey of the history of Eastern and Western civilizations from the earliest times, tracing the growth and influence of basic ideas, institutions, power relationships, and major political, economic, and social movements.

Pre-historic Philippines (prehist)
3 units
A course devoted to the study of the Philippines before the advent of Spanish colonization, emphasizing the beginnings of Philippine society and culture.

The Philippines under spain (philspa)
3 units
A more specialized treatment of selected aspects of Philippine history from the 16th century to the 19th century; emphasis may be given to the development of a region or ethnic group, or to other topics that lead to an understanding of the Filipino’s Spanish past.

Cultural history of the Philippines (culthis)
3 units
A survey on the artistic (major art forms) and intellectual history of the Philippines from the Spanish time to the present.

Philippine nationalism and social movement (philnat)
3 units
Detailed examination of the 19th century origins of Philippine nationalism, the Revolution, and the Philippine-American War, and the influence of this period on 20th-century nationalist activities as well as peasant worker-based movements.

The Philippines in the 20th century (conphil)
3 units
A study of the selected aspects of the recent past with an emphasis on periods such as the U.S. Administration, the Commonwealth, the Japanese Occupation, and the early decades of the Third Republic, or topical subjects like the labor movements and cultural life.

History of east asia (easasia)
3 units
A study of the development of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean civilizations either in their entirety or with a specific area and/or period focus; an introduction to non-Western concepts of man. Society, and the state in a historical context.

History of southeast asia (soeasia)
3 units
A survey of the historical development of mainland and island Southeast Asia, from the rise of the classical states to the modern period, stressing the common structures of material life and historical experience that make the regional concept meaningful.

European history (eurohis)
A survey of the history of Europe, covering the ancient (Greece and Rome), medieval, and the modern periods-from the 16th century to the post World War II period.

American history (usahist)
3 units
A survey of the history of the United States, appraising the political, social, economic, and cultural developments from the colonial period passing through the revolutionary periods, the Civil War II, the reconstruction, and post-World War II period.

Philosophy of history (philohi)
3 units
A study of the philosophers of history from Vico, Voltaire, Von Herder, and Hegel, to Collingwood, Marx, and Spengler, introducing the classical historical interpretations that encompass all mankind’s development.

Historical methodology (hismeth)
3 units
Principles, methods, and problems of historical research and writing.

Diplomatic history (diplohi)
3 units
As a background, this course begins with a brief discussion on the attempts of Aguinaldo to have the international community recognize the Philippine government. Then, the course focuses on the diplomatic relations of the Philippines during the new republic in 1946. The course centers on the political, economic and social ties of the Philippines with the international family of nations.

Special topics in history (spechis)
3 units
This course focuses on significant aspects of Philippine history which historians tend to overlook such as millenarian or messianic movements, women studies, popular or regional uprisings, relatively unknown historical events, marginalized historical figures and other local and regional historical events that had some national moorings.

Economic history (econohi)
3 units
This course covers the pre-colonial structure of the economy from the simple land ownership, barter and economic intercourse with our Asian neighbors. During the Spanish period, a study will be made on the more complex new economic orientation of the colony from vandala, indulto de comercio, polo y servicio, galleon trade, monopoly system, etc. During the American period, discussion will center on economic pacts such as Payne-Aldrich Act, Tydings-Kocialkowski Act, etc. The economic situation of the country during the Japanese Occupation will also be tackled then shift to discussion on post-war economic conditions with focus on the parity rights, Bell Trade Act, Laurel-Langley Act, etc. The economic policies of the different presidents of the republic will also be studied from the nationalist economy of Garcia, the land reform of Macapagal to the emergence of the Philippines as a tiger economy in Asia during Ramos’ administration and how it addressed the challenges of globalization.

Practicum (prctcum)
3 units
This course prepares the students for future careers where a thorough knowledge of history is required. Practicum will enrich the knowledge of the students in History by providing them hands-on, actual and on-the-job training in private and public entities or agencies such as the National Historical Institute, National Archives and National Library or provide them actual training in historical research under the supervision of responsible historians and scholars like the senior faculty members.
